Sky brightness

Annual estimates for a clear, moonless sky at zenith. Lower Bortle means darker skies; higher mag/arcsec² means darker skies.

Bortle values are brightness-based equivalents for comparison. A field Bortle class also depends on the whole sky and visible objects. Night cards include estimated moonlight at the displayed observing time; clouds, haze and local lighting are not included.

Bortle equivalents interpolate published sky-brightness ranges. Moonlight uses the Krisciunas–Schaefer model with a standard clear atmosphere.
